Painters create images with paint. Photographers capture images with ‘photos’, Greek for ‘light’.

Long before the first photographs were made, Chinese philosopher Mo Di and Greek mathematicians Aristotle and Euclid described a pinhole camera in the 5th and 4th centuries BC.

Invented in early 19th century, photography was able to capture more details than traditional medium then-- painting and sculpting. The first permanent photoetching was by French inventor Nicéphore Niépce in 1822. Niépce collaborated with Louis Daguerre to improve his method’s exposure time. Daguerre took the first ever photo of a person in 1839.

Hercules Florence created a similar process in 1832 and English inventor William Fox Talbot discovered another means to fix a silver process image. By 1840, Talbot invented the calotype process, which created negative images. Talbot's famous 1835 print of the Oriel window in Lacock Abbey is the oldest known negative in existence. The rest as they say is history.

Photography gained the interest of many scientists and artists from its inception. Scientists have used photography to record and study movements. Artists have become equally interested by these aspects but also with the opportunity to explore avenues other than the photo-mechanical representation of reality.

With the dawn of modern technology, cameras have almost become a necessity more than a luxury
