Diarrheal and acute respiratory infections take the lives of millions of children in developing countries each year. Although it is known that the most effective and inexpensive way of preventing such infections is handwashing, handwashing with soap is seldom practiced and difficult to promote.
With this, the 2008 UN General Assembly (since 2008 was International Year of Sanitation) declare October 15 as the Global Handwashing Day, a campaign to motivate and mobilize people around the world to wash their hands with soap.
The goal of the movement is to transform handwashing with soap from an abstract good idea into an automatic behavior performed in homes, schools, and communities worldwide as a key approach in disease prevention and in effect, reduce deaths caused by diseases especially among children.
On October 15, through its SM Cares Program- Children's Committee, SM Supermalls nationwide joins the rest of the world for the Global Handwashing Day. At SM City Davao, the celebration will be marked with a ceremony at the Mall’s Main Atrium, 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
Everyone is invited to join the crusade because “CLEAN HANDS SAVE LIVES”.
