SM Davao celebrates Breast feeding month

Being a family destination of choice, SM Supermalls have been committed to providing comfort to its customers.

Thus, in 2008, SM City Davao launched its Breast feeding Station to give breast feeding mothers a comfortable place to attend to their tasks.

Affirming its commitment to its customers, SM City Davao in celebration of the Breast Feeding Month held a Breast Feeding Seminar last August 18 at the Event Centre. The forum was dubbed “Supporting Breast Feeding”.

During the celebration, City Health Office Project Coordinator Chona Dazon discussed the benefits of breast feeding while full-time mom Lyn Tan (Mommy Sense co-founder and breast feeding advocate) shared her experiences of breast feeding and going back to work. Corework Pilates manager Joel Micabalo introduced pilates for moms and pregnant women.

The forum was attended by student nurses from Ateneo de Davao University,    Davao Doctors College, Davao Medical School Foundation and Fabie School of Midwifery; Health workers from Puan, Jacinto, Marfori, Matina, Aplaya, Mini Forest; expectant and breast feeding mothers.

The event was a project of SM Cares Committee on Women’s Affairs in cooperation with the Department of Health and Unicef.

MODA MINDANAW 2010 Levels Up!

Among the Kadayawan Festival events, the Moda Mindanaw has gained much following after 2 years of running. An evolution from the Urog Etnika, the  Moda Mindanaw has opened doors of opportunities not only for Davao-based designers but to budding artists from its nearby provinces as well. “Moda” (Italian, to mean fashion) and “Mindanaw” therefore, best describes the extravaganza.

Last August 22, nine talented  artists are set to battle for the best “fast forward” street wear: Uni Sam Apat, June Rodino Artajo, Nicky de Asis, Miku Betsuki, Harold Andy Cabrera, John Glenn Rañon, Joanna Cong, Mandy Velasco, Wilson Limon and another set of nine for the evening gown: Jhon Marilao, John Ryan Ayala, Frida Cabilles, Jhayar Magdaleno, Marco Laurencio, Jayson Glarino, Jones Joseph Buladaco, Vincent Medel and Mharo Lao.

Prior to the presentation of the entries on Moda Mindanaw night, the participants underwent “critiquing” session with personalities in the fashion industry. During this time, the designers presented their sketches and was then evaluated by professional designers. This was done to further improve their creations and ultimately, their crafts.


The esteemed panel of judges include Susan Antepuesto of Isadora, Maureen Siongco of Knots 4ever, Arch. Michael Dakudao (lifestyle writer), Joel Mendez (Weightless Center proprietor), Mutya ng Dabaw 1998 Carol Kent Ramos, Photographer/ Lifestyle writer Jojie Alcantara and Silverio Anglaser of Silverio.


Apart from the opportunity of being part of Moda Mindanaw 2010, winners get to bag Php 10, 000 (1st place), Php 8,000 (2nd place), and Php 5,000 (3rd place).


For the Street wear category, Harold Cabrera took home the grand prize while Miku Betsuki and Junnie Artajo bagged the 2nd and 3rd place.

Marco Laurencio’s number which was gloriously worn by model Kitten Maambong proved to be the best among the entries for the evening wear. Jayson Clarino’s and Ron Nacua’s landed 2nd and 3rd place.

This year, Moda Mindanaw paid tribute to homegrown Davao fashion designer Don Mascariñas. Mascariñas has won various design competitions including SM’s Sagala Gown Design Competition and the Urog Etnika.

Antonio and Anya, set for SM Little Stars Grand Finals

Now on its 4th year, the nationwide kiddie talent search is ready to give away over P1 Million worth of prizes and the chance for the top three winners to visit SM China.
After the preliminary auditions last July 18, twelve cute kids made their way to the August 8 Regional Finals where they showcased their unique talents and charms. At the end of the day, the stars that shone brightest were 7-year old Antonio Paulion Obed and 6-year old Anya Maxine Cruz.


Obed dreams of being a pilot someday and was inspired to join the competition to share his talents. On the other hand, Cruz wants to be an actress and says joining SM Little Stars will afford her exposure for her to reach her dreams.


Cruz and Obed are set to represent the Davao Region at the SM Little Stars Grand Finals on August 22, 2010 at the Music Hall of SM Mall of Asia.

SM Little Stars grand winner will get P200,000 worth of cash and shopping money (50% cash and 50% shopping money, five (5) days and four (4) nights trip to China for two with round trip tickets, itinerary, free hotel accommodation inclusive of breakfast, lunch and dinner, birthday party package from Nido Fortified Science Discovery Center worth P20,000, SM Bowling Scholarship or 10 sessions in Bowling Formal Lessons worth P10, 450, SM Ice Skating one day unlimited play, Toy Kingdom Gift Certificate worth P12,000, Center for Pop Children's Scholarship Grant of preliminary singing lessons, and SM Storyland Gift Certificate worth P10,000.

Kadayawan heat rises at SM Davao

After the Kadayawan sa SM official opening ceremony last Sunday, with the Flora Mindanaw and Madayaw dancers cultural show, the festival temperature continues to rise at SM City Davao.
On Saturday, August 21, catch the Party Pilipinas Kapuso stars- Kris Lawrence, Miguel Escueta, Sara Labahti, Sef Cadayona and Winwyn Marquez at 5 PM and  hottest Japanese-Brazilian model Daniel Matsunaga in a Meet and Greet session brought by Mario d' Boro at 8 PM with the Tema X Band, Event Centre.

The most awaited festival fashion event then caps the celebration on Sunday, August 21, 5 PM in Moda Mindanaw' third year of showcasing the works of Davao designers utilizing Davao crafts and fibers.

Meanwhile, the country' longest-running and largest Agri-trade Fair runs until August 31 at the SM Open Grounds. Entries of Flora Mindanao, the first containerized garden competition, greet shoppers at the mall entrances with the works of local floriculturists and landscape artists in celebration of Davao's bountiful flora and flourishing floriculture industry.

Traditional  costumes by Davao' 10 tribes and CCD' (Camera Club of Davao) Kadayawan photos will be on public exhibition until Friday, August 20. Multi-awarded Sta. Ana Elementary School Dance Ensemble is also set to end the week-long showcase of cultural performances in The Best of Sayaw Mindanaw, 5 PM at the Event Centre.

SM Davao Kadayawan Sale starts TODAY-- August 13!

Featuring works by the elite Camera Club of Davao, this exhibit serves as a window to the entire celebration- Floral Float Parade, Indak-indak sa Kadalanan, Sayaw Mindanaw, Moda Mindanaw and other Kadayawan activities.

A salute to the 10 tribes of Davao City. Featuring the best of Kadayawan street dancers and live music to formally announce the beginning of a week-long merrymaking!

The Best of Sayaw Mindanao ( August 16-20/ 5 PM, Event Centre)
Discover the culture of the Davao tribes through legends and folk tales artistically presented in narrative dance performances. This year, SM City Davao brings together the best of Sayaw Mindanaw.

Flora Mindanaw (August 15-20, Mall Area)
Making use of the rich flora of the city, the first Flora Mindanaw will gather the most prolific floricuturists in a containerized garden competition.

Party Pilipinas celebrates Kadayawan. GMA’s Sunday noontime party is set to rock Davaoeños with the most sought-after Kapuso stars -- Kris Lawrence, Miguel Escueta, Sara Labahti, Sef Cadayon and Winwyn Marquez.

On its 3rd year, Moda Mindanaw can only get bigger. This showcase of talents by the best designers of Davao and nearby provinces will stir your interest as they make use of local indigenous materials in fashion-forward numbers. More than a competition, Moda Mindanaw aims to promote creativity and ingenuity among the talents in Davao. This event is made possible by SM Department Store, Coco Cabaña, Gibi Shoes and Greenwhich.  

Slipper Design Competition (August 22/ 12 NN, Event Centre)
Dress your flops up and get a chance to win prizes from SM Department Store. This design competition is set to provide an avenue for participants to express Kadayawan with their flip flops. Promo runs from until August 22.

SM Foundation welcomes new scholars

The SM Foundation College Scholarship Program helps provide quality education to deserving underprivileged high school graduates. The program which began in 1993 has produced alumni whom are gainfully employed with prestigious companies both in the country and abroad.

For the school year 2010-2011, SM Foundation has 27 scholars enrolled in 4 universities of Davao- University of the Philippines in Mindanao, Ateneo de Davao University, University of Southeastern Philippines, University of Immaculate Conception and University of Mindanao.

New scholarship grant recipients are John Richard Gonzalez (BSME), John Rey Musa (BSA), Ericka Muriel Chua (BSA), Cherry Ann Cancinco (BSECE), Michelle Ann Espanto (BSCOE) and Jayson Lolo(BSEE).

With the said scholarship program, the SM Group of Companies remain committed to their corporate social responsibility program. This is the company’s means of giving back to the communities who continue to patronize its services after its first store was established more than 50 years ago.
