After its inception in 2007, SM Supermall’s Trash to Cash Recycling Market Fair has impacted both the community and the environment. The program enabled communities and individuals all over the country to save trees, recycle wastewater, and redirecting volumes of trash from the landfill Also, the said program, SM Supermalls encourages shoppers to reduce waste while earning money.
“Trash to Cash” is SM’s open-to-all recycling market held every first Friday and Saturday of the month at all SM Supermalls. The event provides a venue for families and community organizations to come in with their recyclable-- scrap paper and cardboard, empty ink toner cartridges, plastic bottles and scraps, used lead batteries from cars, aluminum, tin cans, and many other items, and trade them in for some cash.
For its efforts to promote recycling, SM was recognized as the “Champion for Re-use/Recycle” by the Zero Basura Olympics (ZBO) during its Earth Day celebration at the SM Mall of Asia Complex. The award is part of DENR’s ZBO program, which recognizes best practices in waste management and also gauges companies’ compliance to RA 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act. SM City Davao on the other hand, earned the WWF Best Environment-Friendly Practices (Industry) in 2009.
Apart from the monthly Trash to Cash, SM Supermalls also promotes proper waste segregation, proper disposal of batteries/mobile phones (with the battery trash bins in partnership with Nokia) and reducing the use of plastic bags through its Ecobags.
Everyone is invited to join the crusade for a, environmentally-sustainable lifestyle by reusing, reducing and recycling. SM Davao’s Trash to Cash is scheduled on October 1 and 2 (Friday & Saturday), 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM at SM Davao Parking C.
