Sudoku, popularized by a Japanese puzzle company in 1986, is a logic-based combinatorial, number-placement puzzle. Sudoku, in Japanese, literally means “single number”. The game’s primary objective is to complete the 9x9 grid so that each row, and each 3x3 box contains the digits 1 to 9 without repetition. The puzzle solver is provided with a partially completed grid much like that of the “magic square”, only without the arithmetic factor.
Because of the puzzle’s ability to stimulate logic, sudoku has gained much popularity not only among adults but also the youth around the world. In 2005, BBC launched Sodu-Q, a game show that combines the sudoku with general knowledge. Apart from that, Sudoku software is very popular in PCs, websites and even on mobile phones!
